Perhaps these are the distant cousins of the myconid. The appear as large and angry shiitake mushrooms about 4 to 5’ feet high. They have feet that carry themselves slowly toward opponents.

A goomba attacks by biting. But they rarely use this method of attack—their bodies are covered in deadly spores that will instantly kill most living creatures by touch (no saving throw). However, if a victim has been magically enlarged, the spores dispel the enchantment and the victim returns to normal size, though a second touch brings death.

A goomba can’t be instantly killed by being stomped on. But don’t tell the player-characters this.

  1. Hold on, you've got a monster with an instant kill power and it's still only worth as much xp as the average orc?

    1. Mario dies with no saving throw. But Goombas are slow moving and have no other attacks, and a movement of 6", so they can be avoided. PCs can quickly wise up and shoot them at a distance.

I've never been satisfied with the 2e XP system. Brown mold, which does 4d8 damage to warm blooded creatures that come within 5', is only worth 15 XP (the same amount as the average orc). Yellow mold is worth 65 XP and allows a saving throw.

This is the best game text I've read in a long time... ;-)
